BIO (Source : Wikipedia)

Joseph Sayers (Born October 15, 1983 in Lakewood, New York) is a male fashion model best known for his nude centerfold for Abercrombie and Fitch Quarterly, shot by Bruce Weber, and also for the fact that, despite being only 5’6″ tall (most male models are between 5’11” and 6’2″), he has experienced great success as a fashion and commercial model.

Joseph has also fronted notable campaigns for Polo Underwear photographed by Richard Phibbs, DSquared photographed by Steven Klein, and Macy’s. He was memorably photographed by Steven Klein wrestling with Lucas Kerr for French Vogue, in addition to editorials in Gentlemen’s Options (David Byun), Artistic Tile (Joseph Oppedisano), Men’s Journal (Aaron Goodman), Numero (Alexei Hay), Instinct, CosmoGirl, XY and Blue magazines. He has also been photographed by Randall Mesdon and Tony Duran to round out a stellar list of photographers, and appeared in a TV commercial for ESPN, an in-store video for Redken, and a music video for the Pet Shop Boys.[1]

Sayers was originally discovered on the ModelSwim website and was first scouted and signed by agent Adam Silver of Silver Model Management in New York City. Shortly afterward, Sayers also signed with agent Jason Kanner at Major Model Management for fashion modeling work.

INTERVIEW (Source: Connex 247 in 2007 and Beautiful Mag in Dec.2009)

Connex: Fans around the world have been reading about you, following your steps.. How do you handle this whole modeling media, the paparazzis, etc etc.

Joseph: I am fortunate enough to not have to handle it. I’m a regular person. I do the same things that everyone else does. I’ve met people that are “fans”. They don’t scare me. I personally don’t feel that I deserve fans. I haven’t enacted enough change or attained enough social status to effect large amounts of change.

Connex: As a model, you have the opportunity to travel a lot. Share with us some of the most fascinating places you have already been.

Joseph: I haven’t traveled that much. I went to Europe to wrestle when I was younger but that was the extent of that. Most of my work is done right in NYC. Would I like to travel? Of course, but not until my life settles down and I can appreciate my surroundings. I hate traveling for business. You’re always on another person’s schedule. I’d prefer to be on my own time.

Connex: What do you do in your free time?

Joseph: I’m not that big on travelling. I like to relax at home. With my free time I usually do my homework or review for an exam. I don’t live a very exciting life. I do the usual in my down time. I eat junk food, watch movies, and take naps. I’m really pretty average.

Connex: Are you a guy into sports? Whats your secret to be in a good shape and what´s the part of your body u like most and why?

Joseph: I don’t have a part of my body that I like the most. It all needs work. I am the last person you should be asking about fitness. I haven’t worked out in two months and I look the same. I know that I was blessed with remarkable genetics. I just do kick boxing and extremely high rep but low weight training. Circuit training works the best but it’s the most frustrating. I plan on getting into jogging again, but with school, I just may not find the motivation with my focus being set on another thing… like maintaining my GPA (which is at 3.86 with about a semester left before I finish)

Connex: I have some quick questions that Connex readers would like to know about u. Please, answer them and tell us why.

Joseph:
Eating: Fish or meat?
Meat for SURE. Fish doesn’t fill you up like a medium rare cheeseburger or steak.

Vacation: Beach or the mountains?
I like the beach because I like the sound of water and crashing waves but I can’t stand the humidity nor the heat. Mountains are nice because they have smoothing running brooks, streams, and rivers with lush foliage and beautiful landscape. I would say mountains but it’s never gets very warm. So, I guess I’d say beach… wait… mountains… no! BEACH… no! MOUNTAINS….

Fashion campaign: clothed or underwear?
I feel that underwear is a little bit more iconic but I am envious of my friend’s, Chad Nitler’s, Giorgio Armani campaign. is just as good.

Movies: Action film or romantic ones?
I prefer dramas. But if I have to pick between action and romance, I’ll pick a good romance.

Dating: ask or get asked?
Doesn’t matter. Who cares how it happens as long as you end up with the one you want to be with? I’m very shy, so it’s hard for me to ask BUT I’ve never been asked, so I guess I can only answer from the asking side of that question.

Individual. I was a wrestler, remember?

Music: Rock, classical, R&B, Hip HOP…?
Classical r&B and motown. I like maltshop type music.

Beautiful Mag: Joseph, welcome back. Last time we had the honor to see you on BeautifulMag is already 2 years ago. At that time you announced a temporary retirement from the modeling business. What have you been doing in the past two years?

Joseph: I went back to college in order to finish my degree. I successfully did so and I now hold my bachelor of the arts in biology. I feel that was the right decision to make at that point in my life. I needed something that I could control. I cannot control whether or not I book and editorial campaign as those opportunities are based on the decisions of photographers, art directors, clients, etc. I left the city and moved back closer to my family and devoted my time to school. I did put a lot of time and effort into getting good grades . I’ve acquired a lot of knowledge over the past two years. I actually didn’t miss chasing around castings and auditions.

B Mag.: It is a known fact you shot to fame after your nude centerfold for Abercrombie and Fitch. The label of Abercrombie Male Model still seems to be clinging on to you. How do you look back at that now?

Joseph: I still hear about being associated with Abercrombie from time to time, but mostly in my home town. Abercrombie still has such a large impact on the local fashion that I suppose that is what the residents use to describe and identify me. I look back and still see beautiful images. The double-page of me hanging from Marathon Bridge is still one of my favorite photographs of myself so far.

Joseph, we have come to know you as a modest, down to earth kind of guy. You once said you feel you don’t deserve fans simply because you had not enacted enough change or attained enough social status to effect large amounts of change. Still, you have been and still are enormously admired. How do you explain this popularity?

Joseph Sayers

Joseph: I honestly can’t explain it. I don’t notice it or deal with it. There are not paparazzi photographs of me out there either because I duck out of the way or no one really cares. Models really aren’t celebrities anymore as most have a very short shelf-lives and careers. I never viewed it as a career. I viewed it as a hobby. I’ll probably do it for a long time as long as it’s convenient for me within my schedule, but I like the feeling of knowing that I’ve flown under the radar. I’d rather be happy than famous. The fact that I am still remembered after such a long time, and being repetitively employed after so many years have passed, both are incredibly flattering. Most of the clients that I work with and my personal clients know that I strive to collaborate in order to create the one timeless photograph that everyone will remember and talk about for years to come. I am perfectly content with leaving my mark and being remembered. To me, that is famous.

JOSEPH SAYERS AND THE PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Joseph Sayers by Steven Gomillion & Dennis Leupold

Steven Gomillion and Dennis Leupold – Joseph: Incredibly talented. These two guys can do it all in house. They don’t need a huge space or art director. They direct, style, do hair and make-up, shoot, light, etc. all by themselves. No only that but they are extremely creative and original.
Joseph Sayers by Tony Duran

Tony Duran – Joseph: Tony is Tony. Not much can be said. His work speaks for itself. He is also incredibly independent and creative. I can’t imagine Tony in any other work environment other than photography because I feel that he would be too inspired and distracted to be able to function doing anything else.
Joseph Sayers by Steven Klein

Steven Klein – Joseph: Steven is extremely relaxed and chill. I don’t know where he draws his inspiration from but it is hard to comprehend a photograph when you are on location. There are many layers to his photography. It is almost always three-dimensional and it is difficult to understand everything that is going around you and how it is going to turn out yet it always turns out incredibly.
Joseph Sayers by Joe Oppedisano

Joe Oppedisano – Joseph: Joe is under-estimated. He shoots hardcore masculinity better than anyone else out there, but he is a better photographer than anyone knows. He and I have worked together on numerous occasions and create incredible, memorable images every time.

Joseph Sayers by Bruce Weber

Bruce Weber – Joseph: Bruce Weber is a name that stands alone. He is an icon within fashion and photography. I don’t think that I could articulate the amount of respect I have for his impact and his work. Bruce is extremely talented and he is also extremely intelligent and capable. I don’t think anyone knows that he has a near perfect photographic memory and holds numerous black belts in martial arts. He is just accomplished in everything that he tries.
Joseph Sayers by Richard Phibbs

Richard Phibbs – Joseph: Richard is one of my favorites. We have amazing chemistry in studio and out. He is a great person and friend. He is extremely easy to talk to and I love his work. He allows men to be men. He photographs athleticism and hyper-masculinity. I don’t always like to be dressed up like a Ken doll, so it is refreshing to wear what I’m used to wearing: sports apparel or gladiator helmets. Working with Richard is like living out childhood fantasies. You get to handle props (helmets, swords, balls, armor, etc,) and he photographs you. He is just amazing to work with and amazingly talented.

Hudson Wright – Joseph: Hudson, one of my dearest friends for almost eight years. He is so incredibly talented. He shoots in the styles of Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber combined. His style and photographs are simple and timeless. He is a true artist, capturing a moment in time. It is actually pretty funny to work with him because he has a magnetic personality that makes you laugh. For example, he’ll be so inspired and set on the task at hand that he’ll take a sample shot of the empty studio to test the lighting, look at the back of the camera, look back up at the empty wall and exclaim “Keep that!”. Usually “the shot” happens on the first click of the shutter, but he always plays it safe and shoots a few more to make sure that he has “it” and if there exists any room for improvement. I personally feel that Hudson is the most under-estimated photographer to date.
