From Wikipedia:

“Undergarments or underwear are clothes worn under other clothes, often next to the skin. They keep outer garments from being soiled by bodily secretions and discharges, shape the body, and provide support for parts of it. In cold weather, long underwear is sometimes worn to provide additional warmth. Some undergarments are intended for erotic effect. Special types of undergarments have religious significance. Some items of clothing are designed as underwear, while others, such as T-shirts and certain types of shorts, are appropriate both as undergarments and as outer clothing. If made of suitable material, some undergarments can serve as nightwear or swimsuits.”

Underwear enter the world of fashion

Since the 70’s the underwear have invaded the Fashion Industry. Underwear advertisements appeared to promote more the sex appeal than the practical side of this piece of cloth. Swimwear also emerged in this fashion world when it was just a necessary sportswear garment before.

Calvin Klein was among the first designer to focus part of his collection on men’s underwear. They became famous with the ads featuring almost nude male models. The gay community was of great help to promote this new and sexy approach of the undergarment. The diversity of these clothes now include G-String, thong, boxers,  jockstraps, in addition to the traditional brief .
